Emory’s East Asian Studies Program (EASP) serves as an intellectual center connecting faculty and students from a broad range of disciplines, departments and schools, and links our East Asia-related activities with those of other universities in the region as well as the community at large.

Emory’s undergraduate programs in East Asian studies are well-rounded, and include courses ranging from introductory surveys to advanced language study.  In addition to complete four-year cycles of modern Chinese and Japanese, Emory offers one year of classical Chinese, courses in Elementary Korean, and more than 40 courses on  diverse aspects of East Asian studies.  Study abroad opportunities form an integral part of our curriculum. We have an Emory sponsored program, Chinese Studies Summer Program at Beijing Normal University, and have approved for Emory credit courses at the following universities and programs: Japan (Hokkaido International Foundation, ICU), Kansai Gaidai, Kwansei Gakuin, Kyoto Center for Japanese Studies, (Princeton in Ishikawa); China (CET Beijing, CET Harbin, CIEE Shanghai); Korea (Yonsei University); and SIT Mongolia.

Our students’ remarkable record in winning competitive grants confirms the rigor and quality of our undergraduate programs.  Graduates have received awards for advanced studies from Fulbright, Monbusho and the Chinese Ministry of Education, the Lucius Lamar McMullan Award, and a number of our students have been awarded Emory SIRE Grants (for independent scholarly projects including research abroad). Our undergraduates pursue advanced level research at an exceptional rate: between 2000–2005, 14 students completed senior honors theses on East Asian topics.

In their post-graduate careers, many advance to area studies or international studies programs at leading institutions (including Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, and London School of Economics), while others matriculate at the most competitive professional schools (including Harvard Medical School and Yale Law School). East Asian studies alums currently work for the US Department of State, the CIA, the World Bank, major NGOs, leading law firms and global businesses.
